À l’occasion de la sortie du documentaire « Toujours debout » sur Alain Vastine ce jeudi 18 avril, Arnaud Romera revient sur les raisons qui l’ont poussé à réaliser ce long-métrage inédit, 9 an après le décès tragique d’Alexis Vastine.

Pourquoi avoir eu l’envie de tourner un documentaire sur Alain Vastine ?

Je connais la famille Vastine depuis 20 ans. J’ai suivi toute la carrière d’Alexis pour Stade 2, commenté toutes ses aventures et mésaventures olympiques. Je l’ai accompagné dans les bons comme dans les mauvais moments. Après sa disparition tragique, j’ai souvent revu Alain et je me suis promis qu’un jour je ferai un documentaire sur lui. Pour rendre hommage à l’homme qu’il est, au père qu’il est.

Quel genre d’homme est-il justement ?

Après la disparition d’Alexis, j’ai vu un homme brisé. Par le chagrin. Par la douleur. Par la colère et le sentiment d’injustice. Il a vécu la pire épreuve qu’un père de famille puisse subir, : perdre un enfant. Et il l’a vécu 2 fois. Comment fait-on pour se relever d’une telle tragédie ? Comment fait-il pour apaiser ses blessures ?

J’ai toujours eu de l’admiration et du respect pour Alain. Je me suis toujours demandé comment je pouvais faire pour aider cet homme. Pour l’accompagner. A ma manière, avec mes moyens. La seule chose que je peux faire, c’est essayer de le raconter. Raconter son histoire, son combat, sa résilience. Il fallait qu’il soit prêt à se raconter car le sujet est toujours très sensible. Il y a un an, on s’est dit : c’est le moment !

Comment se passe un tournage sur un sujet comme ça ?

J’ai accompagné Alain durant toute une année, par petites touches, au fil des évènements qui jalonnent sa vie. Je l’ai suivi dans sa ville de Pont-Audemer bien sûr mais aussi en voyage à Cuba ou lors de son périple en Argentine sur les lieux de l’accident qui a coûté la vie à son fils.

Son amour inconditionnel pour Alexis est plus fort que tout et ne s’estompe pas avec le temps. La mémoire d’Alexis est au centre de toutes ses préoccupations, de tous ses projets, de tous ses voyages.

Ce documentaire n’est pas qu’un film sur la boxe. C’est le portrait d’un homme abîmé par la vie, les confessions d’un homme blessé qui essaie de se reconstruire autour de sa grande passion la boxe et dans le souvenir de son fils Alexis. La boxe est le fil conducteur d’un documentaire sur la résilience.

Qu’avez-vous découvert sur Alain Vastine ?

Sa vie n’est qu’une succession de coups durs. Toute sa vie il a pris des coups et été accompagné par la violence. La violence sociale et la précarité lors de son enfance, la violence sur le ring, la violence sur les chantiers, la violence des injustices aux JO, enfin la violence la plus terrible : la perte de ses 2 enfants dans des accidents dont ils ne sont pas responsables. Aujourd’hui Alain Vastine est un homme abîmé. Mais il se bat et s’efforce de rester debout.

Comment se positionne-t-on en tant que journaliste sur un sujet aussi sensible ?

J’y suis allé avec beaucoup d’humilité et de crainte. La crainte de ne pas être à la hauteur. C’est un sujet très délicat, très sensible. Il fallait y mettre un maximum d’empathie et d’humanité sans pour autant tomber dans le pathos.

J’avais peur de la réaction d’Alain, de raviver des souvenirs douloureux, de le faire souffrir un peu plus. Il n’a pas besoin de ça. J’ai essayé d’y aller avec pudeur. Il a été très réceptif et une fois qu’on a gagné sa confiance, il se livre sans fard. Sans retenue. En toute sincérité.

L’objectif était de le montrer tel qu’il est. Avec ses forces et ses faiblesses. Ces petits moments de bonheur et ses gros coups de moins bien. Sa vie est un ascenseur émotionnel.

J’espère que ce film va faire du bien à Alain. J’espère avoir été digne de la mémoire d’Alexis. C’est pour eux que j’ai fait le film.

C’est facile de gagner sa confiance ?

Alain Vastine est un homme de caractère. Il a parfois mauvais caractère. Souvent même. Il a ses sautes d’humeur. Il a ses coups de gueule. Il ne prend pas de gant pour parler aux gens. C’est un gars du peuple, un rural, parfois rustre. Il dit ce qu’il pense. C’est un homme entier. 

Il a fallu apprivoiser l’animal (rires) et gagner sa confiance.

Qu’est-ce qui vous a surpris chez lui ?

J’ai été surpris par son détachement et sa générosité. Alain est un homme qui est détaché de tout ce qui est matériel. Il s’en fiche de l’argent, des vêtements, de sa maison, de sa santé même. Il prend plus soin des autres que de lui-même. Il donne tout ce qu’il peut aux boxeurs de son club, aux enfants du village de Villa Castelli en Argentine. Il est considéré là-bas comme un bienfaiteur.

Sa vulnérabilité est aussi très touchante. Malgré sa souffrance, il s’accroche à la boxe, à ses amis dans le sport, à sa famille. Il est en lutte perpétuelle. Heureusement qu’il lui reste la boxe.

Vous parlez de Villa Castelli, c’est le lieu où s’est déroulé le drame en Argentine. C’est devenu une lieu de pèlerinage pour les familles de victimes ?

Pas du tout. A ma grande surprise, Alain est le seul à retourner sur les lieux du drame, à faire entretenir la stèle du souvenir, à honorer la mémoire des victimes sur place. Il tient à garder un lien très fort avec l’Argentine car c’est là qu’est restée l’âme de son fils. Il se sent habité par une mission : donner un peu de confort à ce village très pauvre dans une Argentine en pleine crise économique. Ce qu’il fait pour le village (avec ses moyens) est admirable.

C’est compliqué de réaliser un documentaire ?

C’est très difficile aujourd’hui de trouver à la fois un diffuseur et un modèle économique pour financer le documentaire. 

Il n’y a pratiquement plus de case aujourd’hui à la TV pour les documentaires. L’espace médiatique se réduit pour des programmes de plus en plus courts, de plus en plus segmentés, destinés au digital et aux réseaux sociaux. Il n’y a pratiquement plus de fenêtre d’exposition pour des longs formats. Le contexte n’est vraiment pas favorable.

Pourtant le sujet Vastine doit toucher les producteurs et les diffuseurs.

C’est ce que je croyais ou que j’espérais. En réalité, le temps a fait son oeuvre. Le stade de l’émotion est dépassé depuis longtemps. Les faits remontent à 9 ans. Les gens ont oublié. Vastine ce n’est plus dans l’actualité. C’est à la fois normal et très décevant.

En fait, le seul angle qui intéressait les producteurs c’était l’angle judiciaire. Où en est l’enquête ? Qui est responsable de l’accident ?

Ce n’est vraiment pas ce qu’on souhaitait faire. L’angle du documentaire c’est Alain Vastine. L’humain est au cœur de notre projet. Donc au début, on a pris que des vents mais ça a renforcé notre envie de ne pas lâcher. On va se débrouiller.

Du coup, vous avez fait comment pour trouver les fonds ?

Au début, on a tout financé de notre poche. On en a eu assez d’attendre des réponses qui ne venaient jamais … donc j’ai dit à Alain je pars tourner avec toi à Cuba, je finance tout. On verra bien. Je ne veux pas avoir de regret. Au pire j’aurai essayé et on publiera ça sur les réseaux sociaux.

Les premières séquences de tournage ont réussi à convaincre des producteurs. Merapi Productions a cru au projet, ils ont cru en l’homme Alain Vastine. Ils ont été très sensibles à son histoire et ils ont décidé de produire le documentaire. Ils ont surtout réussi à convaincre France Télévisions.

France TV est une formidable fenêtre d’expression et de créativité.

Le documentaire sort ce jeudi 18 avril sur le réseau France Télévisions. Ca a du sens que ce soit sur le service public ?

C’est une chance pour nous et un formidable hommage pour Alain et pour Alexis d’avoir cette fenêtre d’exposition sur le réseau France Télévisions. C’est la garantie d’une grande visibilité en gratuit et la garantie de toucher un large public.

Et puis l’histoire d’Alexis Vastine s’est écrite sur France Télévisions à travers la diffusion de tous ses combats en live lors des Jeux Olympiques et des nombreux reportages qui lui ont été consacrés au cours de sa carrière.

Diffusé le documentaire à 3 mois des JO de Paris, c’est aussi un magnifique clin d’œil à Alexis qui aurait dû être le plus grand boxeur français de l’histoire olympique mais qui en a été la plus grande victime.
