Alors que l’année 2023 vient de s’achever, l’heure est au bilan ! Boxeur de l’année, combat de l’année, surprise de l’année, etc. Pour la France comme pour l’international, Punchtime vous propose d’élire les grands vainqueurs de 2023 en choisissant parmi 4 nominés par catégorie.

Munguia vs Derevyanchenko

À 26 ans, Jaime Munguia a déjà 41 combats lorsqu’il défie Sergiy Derevyanchenko, de onze ans son ainé. À 37 ans, l’Ukrainien monte chez les poids super-moyens pour affronter le Mexicain, toujours invaincu et ancien champion du Monde des poids super-welters.

Le combat a lieu le 10 juin 2023. Aucun round d’observation n’est nécessaire. Les deux hommes se lancent tout de suite dans le vif du sujet, les deux envoient beaucoup de coups et les deux cherchent tout de suite à faire mal. Le combat part sur un rythme effréné. Au point qu’il est difficile à croire que le combat ira au bout.

Le Mexicain et l’Ukrainien vont tour à tour alterner le rôle du chasseur et du chassé. Tous les deux vont connaître de gros temps fort et de gros temps faibles. Sur les derniers rounds, Jaime Munguia et Sergiy Derevyanchenko sont dans le rouge mais ne lâchent rien, mains en bas, les deux guerriers boxent à l’instinct et au courage.

Il faut attendre le douzième round et un coup au corps envoyé par Jaime Munguia pour départager les deux hommes. L’Ukrainien est touché au foie. Il va au tapis, se relève, mais tient bon. Même s’il n’enverra presque plus de coups jusqu’à la fin du round, son jeu de jambes le sauve et Jaime Munguia ne parvient pas à abréger le combat.

Le combat va à la décision et Jaime Munguia est déclaré vainqueur à l’unanimité des juges (114-113 ; 115-112 ; 114-113).

Beterbiev vs Yarde

Avec un record parfait de 18 combats, 18 victoires, 100% de victoires avant la limite et malgré ses 37 ans, Artur Beterbiev impressionne. Défié par le Britannique Anthony Yarde, le champion du Monde IBF, WBC et WBO des poids mi-lourds se déplace en Angleterre pour l’affronter.

Il s’agit de la deuxième tentative mondiale d’Anthony Yarde. Faute d’expérience, le Londonien a déjà échoué en 2019 face à Sergey Kovalev. Pour rappel, Anthony Yarde est passé professionnel en 2015 après seulement 12 combats amateurs. Mais avec 23 victoires dont 22 KO’s et 2 défaites, le Britannique se sent prêt à retenter sa chance.

Le combat a lieu le 28 janvier 2023. À peine le combat commencé, on comprend très vite qu’il s’agit d’un combat de puncheurs, dès que l’un touche, l’autre accuse le coup, et inversement. Anthony Yarde tourne autour d’Artur Beterbiev, déclenche en contre et parvient à faire reculer le champion à plusieurs reprises. Le puncheur russe semble plus en difficulté qu’à l’accoutumée.

Mais la clef du combat n’est pas tant dans la puissance de frappe des deux boxeurs que dans leurs mentons. En effet, si les deux frappent très fort, Anthony Yarde semble accuser de plus en plus les coups. À l’inverse, c’est justement après avoir été lourdement touché par le Britannique qu’Artur Beterbiev va le surprendre. Ce dernier sert les dents et frappe de plus belle, Anthony Yarde va au tapis. En grande difficulté, le coin britannique jette l’éponge à la huitième reprise.

Navarrete vs Valdez

Ancien champion du Monde WBC des poids plumes, Oscar Valdez monte de catégorie pour défier son compatriote mexicain Emanuel Navarrete, invaincu depuis 2012 et champion du Monde WBO des poids super-plumes.

Comme souvent lorsque deux Mexicains de ce niveau s’affrontent, le combat est explosif. Fidèles à la tradition mexicaine, Emanuel Navarrete et Oscar Valdez se font la guerre au centre du ring. Dès que l’un se sent en difficulté, la fierté prend le dessus et les coups fusent à toute allure.

Le débit de coups est à l’avantage du champion. Il enverra plus d’un millier de coups cette nuit-là (source : compubox). Oscar Valdez mise davantage sur la précision et sa puissance de frappe.

La fin du dixième round est impressionnante, les deux boxeurs ne pensent plus à se protéger et donnent tout ce qu’ils ont. Lorsque le onzième round commence, Oscar Valdez semble épuisé. Son œil droit est quasiment fermé et il peine à répliquer aux assauts d’Emanuel Navarrete. À l’inverse, ce dernier est encore très mobile et continue à asséner de nombreux coups à son adversaire pendant deux rounds.

Au terme d’un nouveau « classique » 100 % mexicain, Emanuel Navarrete est déclaré vainqueur à l’unanimité des juges et conserve sa ceinture.

Ramirez vs Espinoza

Malgré ses 23 combats, 23 victoires et 20 KO’s, Rafael Espinoza et peu connu. Il n’a combattu qu’au Mexique et son palmarès est jugé surfait. Alors lorsqu’il se présente face à Robeisy Ramirez, champion du monde WBO des poids plumes et double champion Olympique, peu sont ceux à lui donner la moindre chance face au Cubain.

Mais le Mexicain croit en lui. Le 9 décembre 2023, il monte sur le ring pour disputer son tout premier championnat du Monde.

Le combat peut se découper en trois actes. Premier acte, les quatre premiers rounds : Rafael Espinoza domine les échanges, il est bien plus grand que Robeisy Ramirez (185cm contre 168cm), le champion est gêné par l’allonge de son challenger et peine à casser sa distance.

Deuxième acte, tout bascule au cinquième round. Robeisy Ramirez met la pression à son adversaire et profite d’un changement de garde de ce dernier pour lancer un large crochet du droit. Rafael Espinoza va immédiatement au tapis. Le Mexicain se relève mais peine à tenir debout. Il est sauvé par le gong. Les rounds qui suivent sont à l’avantage du champion cubain.

Mais c’était évidemment sans compter sur la résilience de Rafael Espinoza. Au huitième round, le Mexicain semble avoir récupéré et nous plonge dans le troisième et dernier acte de ce combat. Bien qu’emprunté par les derniers rounds, Rafael Espinoza change de rythme et envoie toujours plus de coups. L’apothéose arrive au douzième et dernier round lorsque le challenger envoie pas moins de 120 coups sur trois minutes, forçant le champion à mettre un genou à terre.

Rafael Espinoza a cru en ses chances et il a eu raison. Il est déclaré vainqueur et nouveau champion du Monde WBO par décision majoritaire.
